Mary Louise Stripp was born on June 22, 1949, in the American city of Summit, New Jersey. At the age of 15, she changed her name to Merrill, adding the first letter of her second name to it. She received her education at Yale University, where she studied drama. On the stage of the student theater, she played more than forty roles.

After graduating from university in 1975, Stripp moved to New York City. She debuted in theatrical performances in the productions “The Taming of the Shrew” and “Measure for Measure”. Her debut on Broadway was successful: the Shakespearean, Millerian, and Williamsian heroines portrayed by Merrill were well received by both the audience and critics.

In 1977, Stripp made her film debut. She played a small role in the drama “Julia”.
