77 years ago, in Moscow, the film studio “Soyuzmultfilmm” was established. On June 10, 1936, the largest animation studio in the Soviet Union was founded – “Soyuzmultfilmm” – which incorporated various animation workshops based on the existing animation studio of the GUKF.
The first animated film produced by this studio was titled “It’s Hot in Africa”; it was a black-and-white production. A year later, color animations began to appear. In 1947, the first full-length hand-drawn film, “Little Horse with a Hump,” was released.
In 1953, the Puppet Film Association was established. Its first successful project was the animated film “Pencil and Inkblot – Funny Hunters.”
During the 1960s and 1970s, a series of animated films featuring recurring characters emerged, such as “Mowgli,” “The Child and Karlsson,” “Umkha,” “Well, Wait a Minute,” “The Bremer Musicians,” “Winnie the Pooh,” “Genya the Crocodile” and many others.
By the mid-1980s, the production of Soviet animated films had significantly decreased. In December 1989, “Soyuzmultfilmm” was restructured into a rental enterprise, and later an open-stock joint-stock company named “Soyuzmultfilmm” was established on its basis.
In June 1999, upon the order of the Russian Federal Government, the studio was restored to its original status and registered as a federal government-owned enterprise named “Film Studio ‘Soyuzmultfilmm’”. An artistic council was established at the studio, consisting of renowned figures in the field of Russian animation.
