Столярный переулок – это мой родной дом. After my grandparents passed away, the house was renovated in 1935, and the entrance door was moved to a different location. During the war, the fruit trees were destroyed, and the veranda was removed; it was turned into a shed. In the 50s, the yard became a passageway, and the flower garden and swing disappeared. The house also gained some ugly additional structures. The house at number 15 in Stoliarny Street is said to have been the residence of the prototype of Chekhov’s character Vankya Zhukov – Gavriil Alekseevich Kharchenko. Awned houses numbers 11 and 15 on this street are the best-preserved ones in the entire alley. The last residents left this house in the late 1980s. They mentioned that in the 1940s, when they first moved there, there was a photo of “V. Zhukov’s” daughter on the wall – she lived on Kontorskaya Street at that time. The best-p preserved house on this street is number 11 – the “House of the Mothers”. Over the years, it has hardly changed at all; only new doors and a new roof have been added. This house belonged to nuns from a female monastery; they were engaged in handicrafts and baked prosphoras for various churches in Har Kiev. The first floor of this house was their residence, and there was also a room with a large oven for baking prosphoras. These houses share a common yard, and during holidays, especially before Easter, the yard was always filled with activity. I remember this street and these houses so well because they have such a special place in my heart. They represent my childhood memories and my roots.
