Serednyansky Castle

Serednyansky Castle is located in the western part of the village of Sredne, which is in the Transcarpathian region. Unlike many other fortifications, the place of its erection was not a hill, but a flat terrain. As evidenced by numerous studies, it was built at the turn of the 12th century.

Today from the legendary Serednyansky castle there were only ruins of a quadrangular tower. Its front surface consists of large and small clutches, well polished stones. In the old days the tower consisted of three tiers and reached 20 meters. The thickness of the walls varied from 2.5 to 3 meters. The castle was built by Templar knightsand in appearance looked very much like the Roman border guard towers. With the help of such locks in the 12th-15th centuries, the Templars controlled the situation on the salt road that ran from the Transcarpathian region to Europe. The legend of the existence of numerous underground passages, as it turned out later, was not at all fiction. Over time, they began to be used as wine cellars.

After the Order of the Templars was liquidated, the castle for a short period became the property of the monastic Order of St. Paul. After that he changed his hosts several times, changing each time both externally and internally. During the anti-Hapsburg movement of the nobles of Hungary, theSerednyansky Castle was in the very center of events. He suffered badly and was not restored afterwards.
