The Church of St. Lawrence in Zholkva

In the vicinity of Lviv, in the small town of Zholkva, there is a majestic temple with a high dome - the Church of Sts. Laurentia.
It belongs to the Renaissance: it was built in 1618. The church was designed by an Italian architect commissioned by the founder of the city, Polish commander Stanislav Zholkevsky. The temple became his burial vault after his death in 1620, and later - and his family members.

It is interesting that since the erection of the church almost has not changed- it was not rebuilt. The building itself is in the form of a cross, with narrow Gothic windows. Thick walls indicate that the temple served not only for prayers, but also for defense.

There are three baroque altars in the church. A knightly symbolism, decorating the temple, was introduced by its new owner - Jan Sobieski, great-grandson of Stanislav Zholkevsky.

In 1946, during the Soviet era, the worst for the temple began: first there was a museum, then a warehouse. The interior was almost completely destroyed, the body was stolen. In 43 years the church was returned to the believers. It began its restoration, a new organ appeared. And now the church appears in all its glory, attracting tourists. Near the church there is a church of the Heart of Christ, it is also worthwhile to visit the Zholkovsky synagogue.
