Ivan Horseshoe's Square
In the center of the historical part of Lviv, one of the smallest squares of the city- the Ivan Horseshoe - is located. This place is located near the central Avenue of Freedom and no less famous Theater Street, however it is rather difficult to find it, although it is worth it.
On the territory of the maidan there is the largest in the city fair of embroideries, accessories, decorative souvenirs, jewelry and household items made by hand by Ukrainian craftsmen.
Several centuries ago there was only one building on the square - the hospital of the Holy Spirit. The same was the name of the Maidan in the 14th and 18th centuries.
But there are no eternal buildings, and in 1780 the hospital turned into ruins, making room for the Vienna coffee house and guardhouses, which were built on the initiative of the Austrian authorities.
The attractive aroma of coffee, which is hovering in the air, attracted a large number of citizens, and soon the territory of the Maidan was built up by apartment buildings. The Vienna coffee house on the Holy Spirit Square gradually gained the status of a recreation center for Lviv people.
Today the main attraction of the square is the monument to the fearless fighter for Ukrainian independence - Ivan Podkov. According to legend, the Cossack deception was taken prisoner and beheaded at the very place where in 1982 a monument appeared.
In the 21st century, nothing reminiscent of the terrible events of the past. Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city square - this is a favorite place for recreation of citizens and visitors of the city. It's nice to relax, sitting down on the benches in the shade of trees, and gain strength before visiting the Town Hall and the numerous Kamenets that are nearby.
