St. George's Church

The city of Korets is located 60 kilometers from the city of Rivne. The picturesque valley of the Korchik River gave him today's name. The first mention of this city came to us from the 12th century and was preserved in the Ipatievsky Chronicle.

It is known that in 1380 Korets passed into the possession of Prince Feodor Ostrozhsky, who built a majestic castle here. Later, the princes of Korecki fortified the castle and cut a new channel for the river to equip the defensive moat. To this day, this castle was not preserved, since in 1832 it was destroyed during a fire. Today the remains of the castle tower above the steep slopes of the river.

One of the main local attractions is the St. George's Church. Information about the erection of this church has not been preserved, but it is truly known that in 1877 its exterior appearance was substantially updated. The church is a monumental five-domed building, on the side of the main entrance to it is a bell tower.

Not only St. George's Church attracts tourists from different places to Korets. Here you can see a small wooden Ilyinsky church, built in 1595. The church is a unique monument built according to an ancient design in the form of a tetrahedral chopped tent, devoid of top lighting, having gently sloping stingrays. In addition, in the town there are still two wooden churches of Voznesensk and Pyatnitskaya.

Getting acquainted with local attractions, visit the museum of local lore. Examine its rich and interesting expositions, consisting of many rare exhibits.

No less interesting is the history of the women's Holy Resurrection Monastery, located in Korce. For several centuries this church was the spiritual center of all Volyn. It was founded in 1064 by the first hegumen of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, Varlaam. Its main shrine is the miraculous Korets icon of the Mother of God "Sporuchnitsa sinners".

To get to Korets it is possible by car, to follow it is necessary in the direction of the city of Rivne. The road here will take you no more than three hours, if you decide to go by bus, then the journey time will increase to 4.5 hours. Regular buses to Korets leave from the Kiev bus station every hour.
