The main railway station in Dnepropetrovsk
In Dnepropetrovsk there are two railway stations - Central and Southern. The central railway station is located near the city center and has more directions. But the most important advantage of Dnepropetrovsk railway station is its building - one of the most beautiful in the city. You will not remain in this doubt, if you see it in the evening. Then the building is illuminated by special built-in lamps, which give it a kind of mysterious grandeur.
The building of the central station of Dnepropetrovskwas built in 1884, when the city still bore the name of Yekaterinoslav. The same name had the station - "Ekaterinoslav". However, she was not the first in the province. Originally, in 1873 a station was operating on the left bank of the Dnieper in the direction of Lozovo-Sevastopol. When it was decided to increase the number of railways of the city and laying a new one to the Dolinskaya station, the best option was the construction of the Central Station on the right bank of the Dnieper.
The kind that the railway station of Dnepropetrovsk has today is different from the building built in the 19th century. The thing is that during the Second World War all roads leading from the city were blown up by the fascists. And the station was in ruins and could not be restored. In 1951, the architect Alexei Dushkin re-constructed the building of the new Central Station in the style of the "Stalin Empire." The structure itself has an elongated rectangular shape. In the middle there is a central entrance to the internal premises and to the railroad tracks of the station. It is stylized under an arch that is completely covered with glass. On two sides of the arch there are two pylons that are slightly higher than the building itself. They have premises for employees of Ukrzaliznytsia. On the sides of the central entrance there are symmetrical right and left wings of the station. They are densely surrounded by huge columns, which are crowned with deciduous decor in the Corinthian style. There are waiting rooms, cafes, information, ticket offices, as well as an underground pedestrian crossing.
The building of the Central Railway Station is the main, but not the only part of the architectural composition of the Grigory Petrovsky Square. Leaving the main entrance of the station, on the right you will see a residential building, which harmoniously complements the whole ensemble of the square. Opposite him is a five-story house that does not have an acute angle, but gradually turns to the main avenue of the city. Opposite the building of the station, you will see a seven-story house. Its two-tier structure echoes with the structure of the central station. Between these four buildings is the area named after Grigory Petrovsky. From this square you can reach either end of the city by a fixed-route taxi, tram or subway.
