St. Mark's Church

justify ">In the village of Varjazh in the Lviv Region there is the Catholic Church of St. Mark. This monument of Ukrainian architecture was erected in the early Baroque style by the architect Wojciech Lenartowicz in 1688-1893.

The Polish industrialist Marco Matchinsky initiated the construction of the church. He allocated funds for the construction of a brick church, decorated with side two-tiered towers. During the fire in 1796 the church suffered considerable destruction. And after the restoration works, its roof and towers became much smaller. Despite the fact that for its long history the temple has lost its former beauty and chic, it still amazes with its grandeur and monumentality. Two of its towers have a baroque finish, their tiers are decorated with a patterned attic. The side facades of the church represent a stepped composition, which is built in a special way, enhancing the height and volume of the building.

Today the church of St. Mark does not work, but everyone can get to the middle. On the walls of the temple to this day are preserved fragments of frescoes, made by Stanislav Stroinsky in 1810. In the central part of the temple you can see the basement, in which the crypt survived, where the burial places of noble people and politicians of that time took place. According to the local legend, it was possible to get from the church to the nearby farm by the underground passage.

Visit this small Hutsul town, here the history and culture of the western Ukrainian lands is particularly felt. And the local clean air and picturesque nature will not leave anyone indifferent.

Given that the settlement Varyazh is located in the Sokal region, on the very border with Poland, then it is almost impossible to get there without a passport. Border guards carefully check the documents of all tourists, so when going to Varangian, do not forget to take them with you on a trip.

You can get to the ancient Varanga by shuttle buses that depart from Lviv or Sokal.
