Baron Steingel Castle
The house of Baron Steingel in Kiev is located on Yaroslaviv Val Street, and resembles a castle. This mansion was built in the late 19th century for the landowner Mikhail Podgorsky in the design of a young and very talented architect Nikolai Dobichevsky. A special chic of the building is given by a quaint tower with a sharp gothic spire, walls with jagged edges, narrow lancet windows and openwork grilles. Above the entrance to the arch there are two mythical creatures that seem to support the tower. And one more interesting detail - in front of the entrance to the building there is an inscription "SALVE" (in Latin - "hello") on the marble floor with a beautiful mosaic.
There is still no consensus on who owned the mansion. For a long time there was a legend that the castle belonged to the manufacturer, who produces tobacco products called "Salve". Subsequently, he gave this house to his girlfriend.
Some scientists believe that the owner of the castle was Maxim Shteingel, owner of wineries and shops, which in this house never lived. And the essence is this: in the neighborhood, during the construction of the house, Baron Steingel lived, and the building of the new mansion was attributed to him.
During its history, the house was replaced by many owners. At one time there was located on the first floor of the confectionery, later settled down cinema hall. The upper floors were leased to tenants. Under Soviet rule, the apartment housed communal apartments. In the early 2000s, residents were evicted, and the mansion was transferred to private ownership.
The castle has not changed much since its construction, and is still in good condition. Most of the rooms are decorated with stucco moldings on the ceilings, many tiled fireplaces have been preserved. The castle of Baron Steingel is considered one of the most beautiful monuments of architecture in Kiev.
