The world's largest settlement on the water
In the riverbed of the Brunei is a settlement, consisting of four dozen villages, which are located literally on the water. It is called Kampong Ayer and its history has lasted for more than 1300 years.

Here live about 30 thousand people, which is more than 10% of the total population of the whole country. Schools, police stations, fire stations, hospitals, markets and houses are located on stilts. All the buildings connect more than 36 kilometers of bridges. It is noteworthy that modern buildings of concrete are being built on piles. Initially, Kampong Ayer was located slightly downstream of the Brunei River, closer to its mouth. Over time, the settlement gradually & laquo; moved & raquo; up the river. Kampong Ayer is recognized as a national treasure and the state is making great efforts to preserve this lifestyle.
