Zbarazh Castle
Zbarazh Castle is truly a architectural gemof Ternopil region and a visiting card of Zbarazh. There was a castle on Zamkova Hill - in a park, not far from the city center. The castle was visited by such famous figures as Ukraine's hetman Ivan Mazepa and Tsar Peter I.
The construction was conducted by the last representatives of the Zbarazhsky family- Yuri and Christopher in 1626-1631 according to the project of the Flemish architect Van Peen, who was inspired by one of the fortification projects of Vincenzo Scamozzi. Architectural style is late Renaissance. The main purpose of the castle was defense. The castle impresses with its grandeur and power, although at first glance it looks quite simple.
The walls of the building witnessed the siege of Bogdan Khmelnitsky during the national liberation war. After the betrayal of the Tatars, the Ukrainian forces had to sign the unfavorable Zborivsky Treaty. These events were included in Henrik Sienkiewicz's book "Fire and Sword", after its adaptation the castle became a tourist center.
Zbarazh Castle was given the status of State Historical and Architectural Reserveonly in February 1994. It was then that restoration work began, as the castle suffered considerably during the First and Second World Wars. Then the building was privately owned by Emilia Javez and in 1908 the government ordered him to carry out restoration work, but they did not take place. With the acquisition of Ukraine's independence, there was opened the museum of the National Reserve "Castles of Ternopil Region".
There are group and individual excursions per castle.
