Dnepropetrovsk Historical Museum named after Dmitry Yavornytsky was founded in 1849. His first name is & ndash; Museum of Antiquities of Ekaterinoslav province. At that time in the museum there were not more than one hundred exhibits. However, thanks to the efforts of outstanding political and cultural figures, such as Alexander Paul, Andrei Fabre and academician Dmitry Yavornitsky, the collections were constantly replenished and eventually became one of the best in all of Russia.

Money for construction was collected literally all over the city, significant funds were donated to the local nobility.

Some part of the funds was lost in the period from 1917 to 1920s, then its priceless The exhibits were transferred to other newly created museums. And even in spite of the fact that a lot of valuable items confiscated from merchants and nobles were subsequently brought to the museum, it was not possible to quickly return the expositions to the previous level. However, gradually the number of rarities collected in the walls of the museum increased, and in 1928 there were already more than forty thousand.

The second difficult period for the historical museum came in the years of the Great Patriotic War. Then during the fascist invasion of Dnepropetrovsk, many exhibits were taken out to Germany, and a certain part of the unique archaeological finds was simply destroyed. Since that time, the museum collection is replenished on an average of three thousand units per year. The dry statistical figures are the selfless and selfless work of several generations of museum workers, thanks to which the museum's funds were replenished with rare exhibits.

Today in the historical museum collected more than 250 different objectsnot only Ukrainian, but also world history and culture. It includes archaeological monuments, a collection of ancient Egyptian artifacts, relics of the Zaporozhye Cossacks, old printed editions of the 16th and 17th centuries, porcelain, furniture, watches, weapons, paintings, icons, ceramics, clothes, stone products, as well as monuments of Oriental cultures and much more. A variety of exhibitions, scientific conferences, lectures and symposia are regularly held in the museum.
