Sokolovsky quarry

The Sokolovsky reservoir appeared in Zhitomirdue to the flooding of the already unused granite quarry. An original stone bowl was made by the hands of a man, or rather special equipment and explosives. Now the Sokolovsky quarry is flooded with natural springs.

The quarry and the plant, on which the mined granite was processed, are close enough to Zhitomir. Because of the rapidly expanding city and problems with pumping out water, the extraction of granite in the quarry has been stopped. It was decided to close the quarry, although the plant itself continues to operate.

Interesting was the way to raise the granite upward- it was spiral counterclockwise and was additionally laid boulders. Today, only the divers can appreciate this upgrade, because it is under water. Those wishing to dive to a depth of up to 90 meters are enough in summer and winter. Not only local, but also divers from other cities aspire to get to the reservoir.

In addition to depth and good visibility, water tourists are attracted by multi-level bottom. Another sights of the Sokolovka quarry for a long time was a sunken car. Absolutely whole Zhiguli were at the bottom of the pond until oil and gasoline began to flow from the car. Then the owner of the plant took care of removing the car.

Since the moment of the flooding of the quarry around the city, there have been a lot of rumors about the excavator, which did not have time to pick up when the water started arriving, and left it on the bottom. None of the divers diving in the pond confirmed this theory.

Transparency of water and the proximity of the quarry to residential buildings each year attracts a large number of people who want to relax on the beach and swim. However, the quarry is part of a closed protected areaand local holidaymakers have to be satisfied with a small area that allows them to enter the water.
