Easter Sunday, the Bright Resurrection of Christ - the most important event of the year for Orthodox Christians and the largest Orthodox festival10 photos
The word “Pascha” comes from Greek and means “passing” or “liberation”.
Christian Easter is celebrated in spring, but the exact date is determined by the lunar-solar calendar. It falls between April 7 (March 22) and May 8 (April 25).
Easter marks the end of the seven-week Lenten season, which prepares believers for this festive occasion.
Easter celebrations began with a procession called the “cross walk.” Led by clergy, worshippers would walk around the church and then return to its entrance, where the priest would announce Christ’s resurrection. Afterward, everyone returned inside for further festivities.
The history of Easter dates back thousands of years. Around 5,000 years ago, Jewish tribes celebrated it in spring as a time for herding livestock. Later, it was linked to the start of harvest or the Jews’ departure from Egypt. Christians, however, gave it a new meaning, associating it with Christ’s resurrection.
During Easter, games with colored eggs were very popular. People would roll them on the ground or use special trays, and sometimes fought each other using these decorated eggs.
We wish you a happy Easter!
PS: In Moscow, on Kuznetsky Bridge, everyone can decorate large Easter eggs themselves on this day, showing their creativity and knowledge of Christian beliefs.
