Shadows of Hiroshima: The phenomenon where object silhouettes appear due to intense light radiation during a nuclear explosion5 photos
These phenomena are named after the Japanese city where they were first observed.
Shadows of Hiroshima occur in similar ways to regular shadows: in areas where objects are blocked from the path of the radiation. Intense light can cause objects to burn or be blown away by the firestorm, while their shadows remain on the ground or walls. In the center of Hiroshima, there are shadows of nine people whose bodies were never found. The city also contains many shadows of inanimate objects.
