The Giant Worlds of Fiddler Oak2 photos
There are no particular secrets behind the techniques and methods used by this 14-year-old American artist—these approaches are well-known, although they require considerable effort and skill.
At just 14 years old, Zev, a resident of Natick, Massachusetts, already has an impressive portfolio. He first picked up a camera—and started using Photoshop—6 years ago, when he was only 8 years old.
However, 6 years of experience in the modern photography world might not be particularly surprising to anyone, and age discounts are rarely granted on the internet. So what exactly has attracted attention to this young talent’s unusual photographs? Zev mainly photographs himself, his family, and loved ones—something that might seem quite ordinary and hardly explain his success. The real magic begins when he sits down in front of his computer.
The teenager skillfully transforms these images; for the “background” shots, he uses ordinary objects, but captures them from incredibly close distances. The resulting photographs bear no resemblance to ordinary amateur collages—Zev’s expertise creates unique, cohesive compositions where the subjects often appear like dwarfs in a world of giants. A flight on a paper swan, a stroll across the piano keys, or a daring chase with a squirrel—are just a few examples from Zev’s extensive portfolio. He posts his finished works on “Flicker,” where he goes by the pseudonym “Fiddler Oak.”
For those particularly curious, Fiddler Oak shared in detail the process behind one of his creations on his blog. Step by step, he explained how he first photographed his uncle against a backdrop of green fabric and then captured several angles of his grandfather’s pocket watch. The most challenging part came next: merging the two images together.
On average, it takes this 14-year-old artist 4 to 6 hours to create and edit a single photograph. He carefully controls the lighting, removes unwanted background elements, adds depth to the images, and applies special effects and shadows. Only when he is fully satisfied with the result does he share it with others. Sometimes, his 18-year-old sister helps him with some of these steps, but the bulk of the work remains Zev’s responsibility.
