On July 13, 1871, the world’s first cat exhibition was held at the Crystal Palace in London. It was organized by Harrison Weir, a renowned animal illustrator and expert on feline behavior.
Weir developed the concept and rules for the exhibition, establishing standards for breed recognition and introducing grading systems based on coat color and length. A total of 170 cats from 25 breeds, as well as a one-legged wild Scottish cat, were displayed.
The judging panel consisted of Weir himself, his brother John, and amateur biologist Father John McDonald. The following day, all London newspapers reported on the success of the exhibition, with images of the cats overshadowing news of high society scandals.
In 1887, the first cat lovers’ club was established in England, which still exists today under the name “National Cat Lover’s Club.” Later, the “International Federation of Cat Lovers” was founded.
Since 1987, feline studies have also begun to develop in Russia. Today, there are dozens of clubs across Moscow alone, and hundreds more nationwide. These organizations conduct scientific research, establish breed standards, register cats, organize exhibitions, and honor the most beautiful pets.
