Boleslav Georgievich Michalovsky was born in 1830 in Vilnius, studied there in a gymnasium, and then graduated with honors from a construction school in St. Petersburg in 1849. His name is entered on the marble board of the school (now the Leningrad Civil Engineering Institute).

Having been assigned to work in the Tver Province Construction and Road Commission, for 12 years he successfully engaged in the construction of bridges, roads and various buildings in Tver and other cities. In 1862 he was transferred to Poltava, where he held positions for 10 years, first - the provincial architect, then & ndash; provincial engineer, continuing to design and build. During these years, he was awarded the title of engineer-architect for the original project of the bridge, and his competitive design for the five-domed church in Romny was awarded an award.

In 1872, Mikhalovsky BG was transferred to the position of city engineer in the city of Vladimir, but was soon sent to work on the Board of the Kharkov Nikolaev Railway. For the forty-four-year-old engineer-architect, wise with experience, a new final period of his life and work in Kharkov has arrived.

In 1874, the Kharkiv City Council invited him to the post of city engineer, which he had been executing for 35 years. His practical work was extremely varied. According to the projects of Mikhalovsky, 7 wooden and one iron bridge were built on the rivers Kharkov and Lopan; under his supervision, a water supply system was constructed and a horse-drawn railway was laid on the streets and sidewalks. But the central place was occupied by the construction of public, residential and industrial buildings for official and private orders.

Adhering to the direction dominated in the second half of the nineteenth century, called eclecticism, which its adherents understood as "the style of smart choice, decent essence of the case", B. G. Mikhalovsky preferred to solve the contemporary tasks of composition and architectural forms of the French Renaissance XVI in, not alienating, however, the use of motifs and other historical styles. The characteristic features of most of the buildings built by him are the floor division of facades with the processing of various versions of multilevel order compositions and the abundant use of relief details: rusticating, platbands, pediments, lyukarn, bay windows, small domes, as well as allegorical plastics.

In a large number of works by B.G. Michalowski were: the building of the City House (1883 - 1885), included in the reconstruction of the modern building of the City Council, and, like an ancient temple, the Stock Exchange building (1880 - 1881), demolished in 1928 when the tram line was laid on the square of Soviet Ukraine . On the square Feuerbach was the building of the 2 nd female gymnasium (1882 & 1885), destroyed in the war of 1941 - 1945; on its foundations grew corps HIIT. Sumy street in the early 1880s It was built at the expense of the patron IG Kharitonenko is a large dormitory building for university students in which the Medical Institute was located. This building was destroyed during the 1941 war — 1945

Partially rebuilt theatrical buildings have remained, in the history of the creation of which the main role belongs to B.G. Michalovsky. In 1884 & 1885 they were attached to the building of the Commercial Club on Rymarskaya Street a large main hall of the opera house, similar in architecture and decoration to one of the halls of the Tuileries Palace in Paris. In 1893, it was produced with the participation of the then young architect 3.Yu. Harmansky, internal and external reconstruction of the Dramatic Theater, which now houses the Theater. T.G.Shevchenko.

In 1887 & 1892 a church was built on Gogol Street, decided, this time, in the Gothic style.

In 1899 - 1902, Michalovsky built the southern wing of the building of the Council of Mining Industrialists of the South of Russia, which was later expanded to the north by the architects SI and I.Zagoskinyh (now — radio technical school on Sumskaya street).

In 1900, together with the architect. M.I. Lovtsov carried out reconstruction with the superstructure of the so-called Bratsk House at the corner of the square. Soviet Ukraine and Moscow Avenue.

B.G. From 1874 to 1893, Mikhalovsky taught Construction Art and Geodesy at the Kharkov Real School, published a brochure and a number of articles in newspapers on urban improvement. In 1904, he was elected chairman of the architectural department of the Kharkov branch of the Russian Technical Society.

Throughout his life, B.G. Mikhalovsky was distinguished by exceptional decency, conscientiousness, hard work and ingenuousness, for which he enjoyed the love of his colleagues.

It is known that he had a brother - Vladislav Georgievich (1831 - 1881), also an architect, and a son — Joseph Boleslavovich (1864 & 1939) — civil engineer, professor of the Leningrad Institute of Civil Engineering, author of an outstanding scientific work "Theory of Classical Architectural Forms", four editions of which were issued from 1916 to 1939 retain the importance of fundamental leadership in this area.

The last paragraph of the petition at the beginning of the article turned out to be prophetic: the city ticket office of B.G. Mikhalovsky did not burden, although Duma reacted positively to the petition, appointing him a pension of 2,000 rubles. per year and scheduled for March 1909, the jubilee on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the birth and the 35th anniversary of impeccable service. The sudden death that followed March 22, 1909, violated plans. An extensive obituary was published in the Izvestia of the Kharkiv City Council. A portrait of the architect was decided to be placed in the meeting room of the City Government and a scholarship named after B.G. Mikhalovsky in Kharkiv Vocational School.

The ensuing gradual oblivion violated a small exhibition, organized in the Kharkov House of Architects in 1981, and this article — the first in the past eight decades of publications dedicated to the memory of the glorious architect of the old Kharkov.
