Boulangerie-pâtisserie, jardin d'attractions «Château de Fleurs»3 photos
Chapel, entertainment park «Château de Fleurs»,
the aristocratic family Tikhoretskiy’s summer garden «Aquarium» and the cultural center «Avant-Garde» on Chebotarskaya Street.
Who would have thought that Chebotarskaya Street, a street inhabited by craftsmen and merchants far from being the city’s center, was known for several remarkable architectural and recreational venues? For instance, the building at number 3, dating from the late 19th to early 20th centuries and of unknown authorship.
The apartment building number 45, designed by architect Ginzburg in 1908. The bakery built by I.I. Zagoskin in 1887 at the corner of Chebotarskaya and Krasnoarmeyskaya Streets currently houses offices.
And most interesting of all is building number 36. In the early 20th century, the entertainment park «Château de Fleurs» was located here; previously, the same building housed the office of a suppliers’ association. Later, the Tikhoretskiy aristocratic family established their summer garden «Aquarium» here. Over time, the building was destroyed during the war. During the Soviet era, the former garden site was converted into the cultural center «Avant-Garde».
In July 2011, the center and the surrounding street were used as filming locations for the movie „The Match“, which depicts a football match between the team “Start” and the German national team “Flakelhof” that took place in occupied Kiev in August 1942. This match is historically known as “The Match of Death”.
The Tikhoretskiys owned summer gardens similar to „Aquarium“ in many cities of the Russian Empire, including Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Unfortunately, no photographs of the «Aquarium» garden have survived.
