Khust castle

Through the tops of the mountainous Carpathian ranges lies a road that leads to the Khust gates of the castle of the same name. Historically, the date of its construction has not been preserved, but some historians suggest that it was founded in the 11th-12th century to strengthen the borders of the Hungarian state, as well as control the salt path. The first mention of the Chust Castle dates back to the year 1191. The governor named Khust was the first owner of the castle. The castle did not last long. In 1241 the Batu horde approached him and already in 1242 the castle was completely ruined by the Tatars. Its restoration took a long time and lasted a very long time, until 1594. Subsequently, the castle defended the local population and knew from the raids of Khan Girey. From the south-east side, the entrance to the gate was protected by a tower, which played a fatal role in the history of the castle. In the tower was a powder storehouse garrison. During a thunderstorm in 1766, lightning hit the tower and provoked a terrible explosion that destroyed the castle. After this, several attempts were made to restore it, but later it was decided to withdraw the garrison to Mukachevo Castle.

A distinctive feature of the Husky castle was a set of legends about the Count Dracula, which relates to the knightly Drago family. The real fact in the legends of the castle is only a well and an underground passage, the creation of which took the builders a little more than 9 years. The well served as an autonomous water supply in the event of a siege. To our time there were only the ruins of the powder tower and the outer gate of the castle, the walls along the perimeter and the bastions. You can also climb to the terrace in order to view the beauty of the valley where the Tisza River flows. The ruins are in the beautiful park "Khust Castle".
