Church of the Nativity of the Virgin, Ugnev

Like most of the temples of Western Ukraine, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin rose on the site of an ancient destroyed chapel. The first stone of the future temple was laid in 1780. For a long time the church gaped with unfinished arches.

For a long time the church gaped with unfinished vaults. Only a century later, the first ringing of church bells was heard. Built from the remains of city fortifications, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin became the most beautiful building of Ugnevand the whole of Galicia.

By the way, this title is relevant for the church today. Despite the difficult history of the building, the ministers of the church managed to preserve the unique wall paintings of D. Gornyatkevich.

In 1936, the artist painted on the walls of the temple not only images of saints, but also portraits of the great people of Ukraine - I. Mazepa, A. Sheptytsky, T. Shevchenko. Today, faces of historical figures are hidden under layers of wall plaster - on the orders of the Soviet authorities. But icons and paintings are available to everyone.

Church of the Nativity of the Virgin is not the only cult building of Ugnev. Walking along the streets of the town, it is also worth visiting the main religious landmark - the Assumption Church.
