St. Nicholas Monastery
St. Nicholas Monastery is located in the city of Shargorod, 90 kilometers from Vinnitsa.
The history of the monastery dates back to the 18th century. It is interesting that he was built not at Shargorod, but in the neighboring village of Kalinovka. At the present place the monastery was due to the Polish prince Stanislaus Lubomirsky, who moved the monastery to the city and opened a school in it.
The monastery had a difficult destiny: the school was replaced by a seminary, then a spiritual school, and under Soviet rule the monastery was closed and turned into a museum. Later it was used as an ordinary storage room. And only since 1996 the monastery began to revive.
In 2000, a copy of the miraculous Pochaev Icon of the Mother of Godwas presented to the monastery by the monks of the Holy Dormition Pochayiv Lavra. The shrine still occupies a central place in the monastery. For more than ten years the monastery has been open to visitors.
This complex will be interesting primarily to architects and art connoisseurs, as it is an architectural monumentthat unites buildings of different times and styles. The ensemble consists of two churches and a cathedral church, built on the model of St. Petersburg's Alexander Nevsky Cathedral. An indelible impression on any visitor will be made by facades with columns, domes and bell towers, towers and cells. Wall painting also survived.
Today, this is not the only attraction of Shargorod. Just across the road is the church of St. Florian Sharoi. And nearby is the oldest in Ukraine Shargorod Synagogue and the Museum of Fine Arts.
