Zholkovsky synagogue
Today's synagogue is built of stone and brick, earlier it was closely adjoined by the Jewish Gates and city walls, and the synagogue itself served as a defensive tower with loopholes and artillery sites.
Inside the synagogue you can see the main square hall, in the center of which are four powerful pillars holding the cross vaults. All the visitors of this ancient building must remember the elements of the frieze, the ancient polychrome mural painting. The ancient inscriptions on the walls of the synagogue recreate the texts of the Torah.
Particularly impressive is the eastern part of the building, where the baroque decoration of the niche for the altar was preserved. On the opposite west side is a two-storeyed gallery, equipped with three doorways.
Zholkovsky synagogue is a place of pilgrimage for many believers from different countries of the world. It is known far beyond Ukraine and is on the list of the New York World Monuments Fund. Restoration of this cultural, historical and architectural monument started in 2000, the work on the restoration of the building is still ongoing. In the future, the Jewish Center of Galicia will be opened in the synagogue.
Visiting Zolkvu, you can also explore other attractions, located near the synagogue. The central part of the city received the status of a historical and cultural reserve. Here is preserved the ancient castle, founded in 1594 by the founder of the city. Nearby are the town hall and the complex of the Dominican monastery of the 17th century.
All architectural monuments have special plaques on which a brief history of their erection is stated.
The synagogue is located in the center of Zholkva, on Zaporozhskaya street. From the Lviv bus station to Zhovkva there are shuttle buses, the road takes no more than forty minutes and passes through picturesque fields, beyond which you can see endless hills. Visiting this historic place will remain in your memory for a long time.
