St. George's Monastery
There are many legends telling about the history of the foundation of the monastery. According to one of them, in the distant year of 891 a strong storm rose near the rocky local shore. Fishermen, who were caught by a storm in the open sea, desperately began to pray for salvation. The storm subsided, and the sights of the seamen opened a large rock, and on its summit was an icon of St. George the Victorious. In gratitude for their salvation, the fishermen founded here first the brotherhood, and then the St. George Monastery, located in a cave opposite the cliff.
The first mention of the monastery dates back to 1578. The monks living there were distinguished by special diligence and rigor, many of them for several centuries served in the ranks of the Black Sea Fleet.
For a long time the monastery buildings were located on multi-level terraces, reinforced with special supports, and represented a complex complex of stone buildings erected on the edge of the cliff. Under the project of architect Ivan Damoshnikov in 1874 on the site of the old monastery church the church of St. George was built. Unfortunately, to this day only small fragments of it have survived, as well as a unique bell tower.
Monks of the St. George Monastery along with the soldiers heroically defended Sevastopol. They not only performed divine services, but also took part in bloody battles and reconnaissance operations. Many of the monks were awarded the highest awards. In the monastery territory sanatoriums, military-political courses, military units and even a dance floor were located at different times.
Today, after several decades of oblivion, the St. George Monastery has been restored. Here, since 1996, regular worship services are held. On the cliff of the Holy Phenomenon in honor of the 1100th anniversary of the founding of the monastery is installed a metal cross, whose height is more than seven meters.
Having visited this place, you can enjoy the beauty and grandeur of the monastery monastery, listen to the noise of coastal waves, admire the giant rocks. Walking among Crimean oaks, fragrant junipers, slender cypresses and spreading fig trees, you will regain strength and get a charge of positive energy.
Looking around St. George's monastery, pay attention to the monastery's staircase of 200-meter height, which totals 777 steps. Going down to the sea, you will find yourself on the most beautiful Jasper beach and you can swim in the sea.
