Kelimutu – a volcano with three colorful lakes

A volcano located roughly in the middle of the Indonesian island of Flores is considered to be one of the island’s most prominent attractions. The main feature of this volcano is three lakes located within its craters, whose colors constantly change.

The Kelimutu volcano rises 1,639 meters above sea level. Its last eruption occurred over forty years ago. According to local legends, when someone dies, their spirit ascends to the crater and disappears into the depths of the lakes. The darker the lake, the greater the displeasure of the deceased soul. All three lakes have unusual names: the Old Men’s Lake, the Boys’ and Girls’ Lake, and the Magic Lake. In fact, these bodies of water contain various minerals, which cause the color of their waters to change constantly—ranging from black to reddish-brown, and from turquoise to deep green.
