The legendary Nikolai Derevianko had a rare and interesting profession - a lantern. For many years, twice a day, at 9 o'clock in the evening and one o'clock in the morning, he walked around all the streets in the center of the city and lit up the lights, and then extinguished them.

Later, Uncle Kolya lit the same way and signs over the shops, now - this is an automatic process. It was a rare kindness person. He was well versed in philosophy, art, geography, history.

In the center of Uzhhorod, at the intersection of Voloshin and Korzo streets, a bronze monument depicting a street-lantern on the staircase - Uncle Kolya. The monument was opened in 2010, and the prototype was a real person who lived in Uzhgorod in the middle of the 20th century and whom everyone in the city knew and called Uncle Kolya.

A monument to a real person, not a fictitious character, like Uncle Kolya, was created by Mikhail Kolodko, who embodied the idea of ​​Mayor Sergei Ratushnyak, who said in his heart that monuments to honored people should be put, not abstract ideas and characters. The choice fell on the well-known and hardworking man who entered the history of Uzhhorod as the guardian of his history and the night light, who, 50 years ago, followed the illumination in the streets of the city.

Uncle Kolya always carried a briefcase with fresh newspapers, and under his arm were invariably books he read for hours, despite his poor eyesight. So the townspeople remembered him: concentrated, with glasses and a hat on his head. Few will pass by the monument, installed just on the wall, not grinning, remembering Uncle Kolya. Uncle Kolya is always at his post and serves as a guard for the central streets of the city.
