The Sudd is a vast swamp located in the valley of the White Nile, making it one of the largest wetland areas in the world. Yet, this region is quite densely populated for one simple reason.

Surprisingly, the Sudd area is considered the most fertile in Southern Sudan, as the rest of the territory consists mainly of deserts and arid plateaus. More than 400 species of birds and around 100 species of mammals live in these swamps, and the local flora is also very diverse. The total area varies with the rainy seasons, ranging from 30,000 to 300,000 square kilometers—almost the size of Italy. These swamps are truly impenetrable.

It is almost impossible to move through them either by land or by water. Such difficult living conditions limit scientific research in this area, leaving many mysteries unsolved to this day.
