#### Vasily Krychevsky and Moskalevka
Vasily Krychevsky can be compared, in terms of his versatility and breadth of activity, to the artists of the Renaissance period – he was an architect, painter, graphic artist, book illustrator, researcher of folk art, designer, scenographer, master of decorative arts, film artist, and educator.
Vasily Grigoryevich Krychevsky was a descendant of Mikhail-Stanislav Krychevsky, a colonel in the Cossack regiments of the Kiev region. He was born on December 31, 1872, in the village of Voroshba in the Lebedin District. He was the elder brother of the famous Ukrainian painter Fedor Krychevsky (1879–1947) and the father of the artist Vasily Krychevsky (1901–1978).
For over half a century, the artist’s family had no contact with Ukraine. He died in Venezuela in 1952, just one month before his 80th birthday. He is buried in Bavnd Brook, USA.
In 1886, the eldest son of this multi-child family came to Kharkov to study. The 13-year-old Vasily Krychevsky was enrolled in a railway technical school, where his skills in drawing and illustration were highly appreciated. His talents were immediately noticed by an official from the city government. At that time, Moskalevka and Zaikovka were undergoing extensive development, and the teenager was tasked with designing small residential buildings. This allowed him to support himself financially while his brother Fedor continued his studies at the Saint Petersburg Academy of Arts. Soon, Vasily also began receiving private commissions.
His first major independent project was the design of a house for the widow of Engineer Gostinopolsky at 80 Chobotarskaya Street. Soon after, the architecture professor Sergei Illarionovich Zagoskin of the Kharkov Technical Institute noticed his talent and took the young boy under his protection, raising him together with his own children.
At the age of 19, Vasily Krychevsky became an assistant to the city architect, with the right to sign his own projects. From then on, many buildings in both the suburbs and the central areas of Kharkov bore his architectural style – his favorite pseudogothic style. This style can be seen in numerous houses designed by him.
At the same time, Vasily worked in the architectural bureau of Alexey Nikolaevich Beketov, the most renowned urban planner in Kharkov at that time.
In 2013, the family of Vasily Krychevsky donated more than 300 of his works to Ukrainian museums, and another 148 pieces were donated the following year.
