#### Glass Stream

(now more commonly referred to as Mirror Stream)

According to one version, based on the memories of former party officials from the Kharkov Regional Committee, the story behind the creation of this fountain and pavilion is linked to an event that occurred in the late 1940s. At that time, Nikita Khrushchev, who was then the First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Ukrainian Communist Party, visited Kharkov. In the office of Viktor Churaev, the head of the Kharkov Regional Committee, Khrushchev looked out the window and was clearly not impressed by the appearance of the trolleybus park nearby. The future leader of the Soviet Union criticized the leaders of the Kharkov communists for the unsightly landscape surrounding their office. As a result of this conversation, the regional committee decided to create a square with a fountain in this location.

In 1946 and 1947, through public volunteer efforts, a “Victory Square” was established at this site, which included a pool and a fountain pavilion named “Glass Stream.” The overall design of the square and the fountain was created by architects A. M. Kasyanov, V. I. Korzh and A. S. Mayak. Next to the fountain pavilion, a swimming pool was built; initially, it was enclosed by a simple brick wall, but in the 1970s this was replaced by a granite fence. In 1958, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Leninist Communist Youth League, a walkway dedicated to heroic young communists was established within the square.

Yuri Gurovoy, who served as the Head of the Kharkov City Council from 1969 to 1976, provided the following information about the “Glass Stream” fountain pavilion:
“If Kharkov residents still remember how this park used to be called—‘Victory Square’—is it because we have always referred to it by that name? Or is there another reason? Perhaps the name ‘Glass Stream’ originated from the name of the first secretary of the regional party committee at that time, Viktor Churaev, whose surname was Churaev…””
