弗拉基米尔·马雅科夫斯基与哈尔科夫

台球决斗

exactly 85 years ago, on January 14, 1924, Vladimir Mayakovsky delivered a speech titled “On Leff (the Left Front of Arts), White Paris, Grey Berlin, Red Moscow” at the Opera House (now the Philharmonic Hall located at 21 Rymarska Street). The next day, he engaged in a台球决斗 with local artists at the Writers’ House on Kaplunovskaya Street (currently 4 Krasnoznamennaya Street).

“In the basement of the Writers’ House, there was a台球桌,” recalls Oleg Petroenko. “Mayakovsky was considered an expert in this game. But the young poet Yoganson dared to play ‘American’ with him. The loser was supposed to crawl under the table and crow. Unexpectedly, Mayakovsky lost! But instead of doing that in front of everyone, he proposed to give a poetic advertisement for哈尔科夫 beer as a replacement. This incident was mentioned by Yuri Smolich, a哈尔科夫 writer who witnessed it.”

Repin failed to depict the poet

This was the third time the poet visited our city. His first visit took place on December 14, 1913, when he came to哈尔科夫 along with the Cubo-Futurists—David Burlyuk and Vasily Kamensky. Back then, these young poets performed at the Public Library; a commemorative plaque now reminds visitors of this event at the entrance to the Korolenko Library.

With his thick, dark hair hanging over his stubborn, piercing gaze, such was the image Mayakovsky presented to the people of哈尔科夫 for the first time. This is how Korney Chukovsky described him, recalling that shortly after his visit to哈尔科ff, Mayakovsky went to see Illya Repin. The artist was captivated by Mayakovsky’s “inspired hair” and had already prepared a canvas and paints for their next meeting. But Repin was disappointed when he found Mayakovsky completely shaven. “I wanted to depict you as a people’s tribune, but you… what a pity!” he said.

Hal科夫 was also enchanted by the then-young Vladimir Vladimirovich. Especially the women of Hal科夫. In 1913, his heart was “half-held” by Ella, the wife of Louis Aragon (who later became famous as Elsa Triolé, a French writer). Together with Aragon, Elsa, and her sister Lila Brick, Mayakovsky visited哈尔科ff to see the completion of the masterpiece of Constructivism—the Gosprom building. But that was in 1928, as our contemporary Nikolai Chekhunov wrote in his book “Gosprom: Time and Fate.”

He tested the poem “Good” in Hal科夫

Lila Brick also visited哈尔科ff in 1927. On her way back from the Caucasus with another lover, she stopped by Hal科ff. At that time, Mayakovsky was performing at the Summer Theatre on Profsad Street (between Rymarska Street and the University Garden, now Shevchenko Garden).

“In his book ‘Mayakovsky in Hal科ff,’ Gregory Gelfandbein mentions that Mayakovsky was worried whether the audience would come during the peak of summer, when everyone was on vacation. So he suggested that poet Semen Kirsanov perform together with him. But there were still enough people willing to listen to their poems,” says Oleg Petroenko.

That same day, Mayakovsky’s lover convinced Lila to get off the train and stay in Hal科ff for a day. In her memoirs, Lila recalled that that night, Mayakovsky read excerpts from his unfinished poem “Good!” to her at the hotel.

Among Mayakovsky’s addresses in Hal科夫 was also the Heroic Theatre, located at the intersection of Meschanskaya Street (now Grazhdanska Street) and the riverbank. In 1921,哈尔科夫 directors staged “The Mystery of Buf” there. The theatre was originally called Maloy (it was also known as Zhatkina’s Villa); both Meyerhold and Komissarzheskaya had used its stage. The building at No. 5 Halkovskaya Riverbank Street was destroyed during the Great Patriotic War.

Mayakovsky was not only invited to official events but also by his friends in Hal科ff. It is known that one such informal gathering took place at the home of the Socialist Revolutionary Nikolai Karelin, located on Staromoskovskaya Street (now Moskovsky Prospekt). However, the poet was reluctant to attend. In a letter to Lila Brick, he only mentioned the host’s cat: “It happily stretched out its paw at me, recognizing me as its master.”

He even performed despite having a sore throat

Mayakovsky’s last visit to Hal科ff was on January 14–15, 1929. The city welcomed him with snowy streets and cold weather. One of the writers found him at the “Krasnaya” Hotel, located at 31 Tveleva Square (20 Constitution Square).

“After performing for two consecutive days at the Drama Theatre (now Shevchenko Theatre) and the Chekists’ Club (currently the Police Cultural Center at 13 Sovnarkomovskaya Street), where he read excerpts from his poem ‘The Cockroach,’ Mayakovsky overexerted his vocal cords,” says Oleg Petroenko. “Gelfandbein mentions that when a writer came to his hotel room, Mayakovsky was on the phone with a哈尔科夫 doctor who strongly advised him not to perform for the time being. The poet often fell ill and was concerned about his voice, but as a man of his word, he couldn’t cancel his performance at the Opera House for the students.”

“In November 1926, Mayakovsky visited the Central Party Club, located in the same building as the Opera House, at the invitation of its director Jan Pupa. It is possible that after the performance, Pupa invited Mayakovsky to his home, as he lived nearby—at No. 46, Suite 6, Sumskaya Street,” shares Oleg Petroenko. “In total, Mayakovsky visited哈尔科ff at least thirteen times.”

Hal科夫 anecdotes

One popular anecdote goes like this: Once, on his way back to the hotel from the All-Ukrainian Film and Photography Administration (located on Gogol Street), Mayakovsky stopped by the “Lux” restaurant at the beginning of Sumskaya Street. The owner, Maria Ivanovna, who was well-known in Hal科夫 circles, asked him, “How are you doing, Vladimir Vladimirovich?” “Not ‘how are you,’ but ‘fifty’,” he replied with his characteristic phraseplay.
