Fountain with the figure of the Mother of God, Lviv
Earlier in the center of Lviv the Poltva River flowed. Before the current Mickiewicz Square, it was divided into two branches, and between them was the Mariy Island. Here, in 1841, after the demolition of the city walls, a source was discovered and the inhabitants of this city decided to build a well of ashlar.
Later, in 1862, in the center of the source was installed a majestic figure of Our Lady of white marble. It was bought in Munich by the Countess Severina Petevskaya, the wife of the Galician viceroy Vladislav Badeni. The creator of the sculpture is Hauptmann. After the installation of the figure of the Mother of God, the square became known as the Mari. In 1904, in connection with the construction of the monument to Mickiewicz and the geological features of the site, the well was moved. In the Soviet era, the figure of the Mother of God was removed. But now its copy is again in its place, and the original is kept in the church of St. Andrew.
