Passage in Kiev
This is the most unusual street in the capital, or rather, home-street. It was built in 1913-1914 on the project of Kiev architect P.S. Andreeva. It was a large neoclassical complex, including a business center, shops, offices and apartments. The passage consisted of two parallel structures that formed a corridor. The facades of the building were richly decorated with original stucco molding.
During the Great Patriotic War, the Passage was badly damaged, but it was restored. In 1944, as a result of the reconstruction, a six-story building with a large arch was added to the original structure. And in the 90's the ensemble was supplemented with a fountain.
In Passage at various times lived many famous people, memorial tablets with their names keep the memory of guests. Here there were opera singers M. Grishko and B. Hmyrya, doctor-therapist A. Mikhnev, sings I. Nekhoda.
Today, the Passage is like a corridor connecting two completely different parts of the city: a metropolis and a reserved Kiev. Both buildings end with arches and form a passage between Khreshchatyk and Zankovetskaya Street.
On the building you can see elegant bas-reliefs with images of coats of arms, batons of Mercury, mutton heads, owls, mermaids, amphorae and fruits. All of them are symbolic in nature. The heads of animals and fruits symbolize prosperity, amphorae with wine - fun, mermaids - temptation, and birds - wisdom and circumspection. Also on the facades are preserved statues of a loving couple and children playing with lions.
On the two lower floors are located fashionable shops and boutiques, cozy cafes and restaurants. The upper floors are occupied by offices and apartments.
The color of the unique house-street best reflects the spirit and mood of the capital's Khreshchatyk. Passage is the center of life of Kyivans. It is here that residents and visitors of the capital like to rest, mass festivities and festivals are taking place, famous television shows are being shot.
The Passage is famous for its remarkable sculptures of modern times. Here you can see a monument to the famous Kiev architect Gorodetsky, who drinks coffee with cream at a round table. Amusing monument to a bicycle and cheerful chairs will amuse guests. Those who wish can walk along the real Alley of Stars, which is just before the entrance to the complex. On 17 stone stars, the names of well-known Ukrainian figures of culture and sport are engraved, among them Oleg Blokhin, Sergei Bubka, Bogdan Stupka, Dmitry Hnatyuk and others.
