Monument of Independence

Independence Monument Flying Ukraine is a monument erected in honor of the proclamation of Independence of Ukraine on August 24, 1991 in Kharkov on Constitution Square. It was inaugurated on August 22, 2012 on the eve of the 21st anniversary of the Independence of the State and Kharkiv City Day (celebrated on August 23).

The competition for the best draft of the Independence Monument on Constitution Square was announced on April 27, 2011. Two month, the winner of the competition jury recognized the model Flying Ukraine - the work of Kharkiv sculptors Alexander Rodnoy and Anna Ivanova. In total 10 projects of nine teams of sculptors, including projects of two sculptors from Russia and the USA, took part in the competition. This is the second monument dedicated to the proclamation of Ukraine's independence in Kharkov. The first monument of Independence was established in 2001 on Rosa Luxemburg Square and was planned as temporary, was dismantled in 2012.

The monument is a pedestal of a strict geometric form with a facade of granite slabs of gray color, on which is installed the bronze figure of the ancient Greek goddess of victory, Nicky on the ball. The figure of the goddess and the ball are made of bronze. The height of the figure is about 6 m, the balls - about 2.5 m, the pedestal - 8 m. The total height of the monument is 16.5 m.

The installation of the new monument was part of the plan for the reconstruction of the Constitution Square. It was installed on the site of a monument in honor of the proclamation of Soviet power in Ukraine, which was dismantled in September 2011. The opening ceremony took place on August 22, 2012. The monument was opened by the President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych. The symphony orchestra of the Kharkov Philharmonic played at the opening.
