Church of St. Nicholas the Good

The temple, called the church of St. Nicholas the Good, has a very long history. It is said that it has been on Podol since the pre-Mongol times, although references to it have been preserved only since the end of the 16th century. Around this time, the legendary Cossack ataman Samiylo Kishka helped restore the wooden church in place of the old, burned down in 1555.

Where did the name Nikola Dobriy come from, it was not possible to find out. According to one version, there was an almshouse at the temple, which helped the poor, sick and infirm. In connection with the good deeds that took place within the walls of the church, it got its name. Another version points to the involvement in the fate of the temple of a rich Kiev merchant named Dobrik, who, after receiving a large ransom from a captured Polovets, provided the shrine with considerable financial support.

During its existence, the wooden church burned twice, until in 1716 it was built of stone. However, by the end of the 18th century, the shrine had fallen into decay, the reason for which was another severe fire. Because of this, the church for a long time was in a catastrophic state, until, after all, it was not dismantled. The new church arose only after 7 years. It was a structure of incredible beauty, sustained in the style of classicism, which was distinguished by its rich interior decoration. It was in this temple that the famous writer Mikhail Bulgakov was married, then his mother later sang.

Unfortunately, the church of Nicholas the Good does not exist anymore, it was destroyed in 1935. However, the bell tower deserves special attention, which, despite all the woes, was miraculously preserved. Many researchers note the uniqueness of this structure, attributing it to the Baroque style with elements characteristic for Ukrainian interpretation.
