The city of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand is one of those regions where traditional Thai culture and art thrive. 5 kilometers south of the city lies an incredibly beautiful white structure – Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple.7 photos
The symbol of northern Thailand has become a true national landmark and, as one of the most recognizable features of the country, attracts an increasingly large number of visitors every year.
Wat Rong Khun is the only temple in Thailand that is entirely painted white, with its glass mosaic reflections creating dazzling effects within the white plaster surfaces. The idea for this brilliant design originated with Halermhai Kositpipat, one of Thailand’s most renowned artists. Over a period of 20 years, he saved every penny earned from selling his paintings in order to build this dream masterpiece.
The color white symbolizes the purity of Buddha, while the glittering glass reflects the wisdom of Buddha, which “shines brightly throughout the Earth and the universe.”
Halermhai’s vision was to create a place for learning and meditation for those who practice Buddhism and seek to benefit from its teachings.
The construction of Wat Rong Khun began in 1997. On a site covering approximately three hectares, a total of nine buildings are planned to be constructed, including a chapel, pagodas, a gallery, a monastery, a lecture hall, a museum, a pavilion, and a relaxation area. Although the complex is still under construction, the white temple has already become a popular attraction for both Thai visitors and foreign tourists.
