By being too successful on stage, he only played a few prominent roles and was more content with working on independent productions.

His film debut in 1958 in the movie “Wiatr” caught the attention of audiences. The film “Swiat przychodzącego”, in which he starred in 1961, won several awards at the Venice International Film Festival. His fame truly took off after his roles in “Kariera Dymy Gorina” and “Dorośli dzieci”. After that, Demjanenko left the theater and dedicated himself entirely to film.

His reputation as a comedy actor was solidified after his performances in films such as “Operacja ‘Y’ i inne przygody Szurika”, “Kabarycka niewolnica” and “Iwan Wasiljewicz zmienia profesję”, where he played the iconic role of Szurik. These films are considered part of the golden canon of Russian cinema.

The image he had established for himself meant that he was rarely invited to film projects. Therefore, he turned to television, where he performed one-act plays and voiced cartoons as well as foreign films. In 1991, the actor was awarded the title of People’s Artist of the RSFSR.

Aleksandr Sergejewicz Demjanenko passed away on August 22, 1999, in Saint Petersburg due to heart failure and was buried at the Serafimskoe Cemetery.
