Cape Chauda

Cape Chauda is a geological monument of nature.

The attraction of this cape is its lighthouse, sandy beaches, and Cosmonauts Bay. Chauda is a cape at the southern tip of the Kerch Peninsula, on the eastern edge of the Feodosiya Gulf. It is a natural landscape and geological monument covering an area of 5 square kilometers. The height of the cape ranges from 15 to 30 meters above sea level. In addition to its vegetation, the cape is notable for the fossil remains of animal organisms that lived in the sea during the Jurassic period of the Mesozoic era. The Chauda Steppe Nature Reserve covers an area of 13,176 hectares. This reserve is home to a large variety of plants, including orchids and two-colored tulips that are listed in the Red Book. The reserve is also famous for being the nesting grounds of common bustards and hoopoes. Near Chauda Cape, archaeologists discovered the ancient settlement of Kazeka. In 1888, after a tragic shipwreck of the passenger steamship Orest, a lighthouse was built there.
